CBD For Pets with Anxiety

Our fur-babies might not have to worry about paying the mortgage or keeping the gas bill up to date, but that doesn’t mean that they have a care-free life. Our pets all have their own little quirks, and they can get just as anxious as the rest of us.

Now, if this is a condition that only manifests occasionally, it’s not going to be a problem, but what if you have a dog that is anxious while you’re away? Or one that is petrified of the mean kitty of the house?

You guessed it – we’re speaking from experience here. Our Peanut was one of those dogs. He’s not a full-on neurotic, but he is an anxious boy. He would get set off barking at the smallest sound and would make one heck of a racket.

He hated being separated from us and would cry piteously when we were out for the day. It’s not surprising that he was anxious – he was a very needy little schnauzer. And, to be fair to him, Misty, our cat, ruled him with an iron claw.

The poor little pooch didn’t even have the guts to walk past Misty during the day.  We took him to the vet to find out how we could make his life easier for him. There wasn’t much that could be done about him being scared of Misty, but the vet did suggest putting him on anti-anxiety meds.

Imagine, happy pills for your pooch. We started with a short course but were told that if that didn’t calm things down, Peanut would have to go onto daily medication. The meds helped a lot. Peanut wasn’t barking as much or getting as stressed out.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t the same dog either. The meds made him very tired and lethargic. From being a very active dog chasing the postman as he walked past the fence, he just started laying around. It was like he was a zombie.

He was never a big eater, but now he ate even less. We investigated the potential side effects of the drugs he was taking, and they included:

        • Changes in appetite
        • Lethargy
        • Fatigue
        • Changes in personality
        • Trouble with memory
        • Vomiting
        • Diarrhea
        • Upset tummy
        • Passing water more often.

Fortunately for us, Peanut didn’t have runny bathroom breaks or vomiting on the meds, but they did have an adverse effect on his personality. Frighteningly enough, one of the potential side effects was increased aggression and anxiety.

That really got us worried, so we looked into alternatives. That’s when we learned about the CBD for pets benefits .

Why Use CBD for Pets with Anxiety?

CBD is a compound that is extracted from the Cannabis plant. Don’t freak out – you’re not going to get your dog high. CBD is extracted from Cannabis, but it’s not a psychoactive compound. The compound that makes you high when consuming cannabis is THC.

Cannabidiol for pets anxiety contains very low, if any, concentrations of THC. It’ll help your pooch relax, without making him as high as a kite. According to a study, it is effective in treating pain and anxiety in pets.

Even vets agree that Cannabidiol oil for pets shows promise, but that we need stricter guidelines about how it is to be used. There just hasn’t been much study on the subject.

Is CBD oil for Pets a Good Idea?

The world has changed a lot over the last decade or so. There has been a lot more research into alternative medicines, and cannabis has fallen under the spotlight. It has been shown to be as effective in some cases as anti-depressants and anti-anxiety meds, without the bad side effects.

At worst, your pooch might feel a little sleepier after taking his meds. It’s for this reason that more people are looking into CBD oil for pets with anxiety. Should we all rush out and start dosing our pets with CBD? We’re not advising that, but if you have a pet like Peanut who’s a little high-strung, CBD oil for pets with anxiety could be a viable option for you.
