Michael Warner is a Professor of English and American Studies at Yale University. His interests include colonial and nineteenth-century American literature; media studies; the history of the book; queer theory; and secularism and religious studies. In addition to his academic writing, Warner frequently contributes to political outlets such as The Nation and The Advocate and cultural publications such as Art Forum. His books concerning early American literature include The Letters of the Republic: Publication and the Public Sphere in Eighteenth-Century America; The English Literatures of America; and American Sermons: The Pilgrims to Martin Luther King, Jr. Considered one of the founders of queer theory, much of Warner’s social commentary appears in The Trouble with Normal; Fear of a Queer Planet: Queer Politics and Social Theory; and Publics and Counterpublics. Currently Warner is working on a study of secularism in America from the early eighteenth century to the Civil War, which will culminate with the writing of Walt Whitman.
